About

Bits and Peas Chess Academy Logo

My name is Kahan Desai, and you may know me from the various chess programs I have facilitated in the Kitchener-Waterloo region. I am a Computer Science student and a passionate chess player. As a strong player and dedicated coach, I have been teaching chess since 2021 to players of various skill levels through one-on-one sessions and group classes.

Since moving to Waterloo for my studies in 2022, I have been actively involved in promoting chess through various initiatives:

  • Youth Drop-In Programs at the City of Kitchener
  • Chess Classes at Grand River Chinese School
  • Youth Chess Programs at Williamsburg and Huron Community Centres
  • Free Public Lectures at the KW Chess Club

While I primarily focus on personalized coaching for individual students and small groups, the increasing number of requests for youth chess tutoring, both to me and from the chess club, has exceeded my available schedule. To address this, I decided to create Bits and Peas Academy as a platform to offer structured group chess coaching.

Our Vision

As President of the KW Chess Club, I'm working to establish a stable, accessible youth chess club/section, providing a space for extensive chess practice and youth competitions. This is part of a larger vision: to build a thriving youth chess ecosystem in the region.

Stay posted with kwchess.org for any updates on our initiatives.
